Dick’s Sporting Goods new Oneonta store will celebrate its grand opening Saturday, following Wednesday’s “soft opening.”
Extended hours will be from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday and Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, the release said, and the store will have giveaways.
Former New York Knicks guard John Starks will be at the store from noon to 2 p.m. Sunday. Beginning at 9 a.m. that day, 250 wristbands will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis, and fans must have a wristband and must be in the “special appearance line’’ by noon to receive an autograph, the release said.
The Oneonta location will be the retailer’s 35th store in the state of New York and its 506th nationwide, the release said.
“We look forward to opening our new Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Oneonta and becoming part of the community,” Lauren Hobart, Dick’s Sporting Goods chief marketing officer, said in a prepared statement. “We want to serve athletes of all ages in Oneonta by providing the equipment they need to help them excel.”
Dan LaBreck, community marketing manager, said Dick’s studied Zip Code information among other factors in deciding to open a store in Oneonta. The local site will have a traditional single-story layout and include shoe displays, a golf shop and a “lodge’’ with hunting and fishing equipment, he said during a recent telephone interview.
The Oneonta store will employ 12 full-timers, including sales managers and leaders, plus 40 to 50 other part- and full-time workers depending on demand and seasons, he said.
Regular hours will be from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Sundays, LaBreck said.
The store will have its own entrance and no access from the main mall.
