Spring is almost here, and many people are craving the sunshine.
Some area residents plan to travel to tropical destinations, while others spend as much time outside as the weather allows. Winters are cold in upstate New York, and the sun is weak during the snowy seasons. When residents begin to soak in the sun’s rays, some may burn.
“The sun is strong and people burn if they lay out for too long without protection,” said Shannon Isbell, of Oneonta, who has worked at Time to Tan for 10 years. “It is good to get a base tan — take about four to six weeks building up a good tan — then, when you go somewhere for spring break, you won’t burn.”
Time to Tan, at 179 Main St. in Oneonta, has been offering tanning solutions, as well as other salon experiences, for decades. They have won the Daily Star ‘Readers’ Choice Award’ for the past seven years.
“We have people coming in for weddings, spring break pre-tans and just to get a little color before showing more skin than they have in the last couple of months,” said Lisa Sperry, owner of Time to Tan.
Sperry began Time to Tan because she felt that it met a need in the community.
“I had a full-time job, and I felt like I was using all of my free time going here and there to get my nails done, and somewhere else to get hair done, and somewhere else to tan,” Sperry said. “I wanted a place that had all of the services a person might need in one location.”
For many, the healthy glow of tanned skin is as important to a person’s self-image as weight, fashion and hair style. Some tan as part of a regular beauty regimen.
