Shop Talk is a weekly column featuring locally owned and operated businesses. This week, we talk to Tyler Logan, co-owner of Boss Dog in Oneonta.

How long have you lived in the area?

On and off, but about 20 years.

Tell me about your business:

We are the late-night hot dog stand on Water Street serving the late-hour bar crowd Thursday, Friday and Saturday night. We also are the originators of "The Bus," which has chili, cheese and crushed Fritos on it.

Describe a typical day in your business:

Well, there is no typical day because the crowds at the bars are always different. Basically we have as much fun with it as possible.

How did you get started in this line of work?

We wanted to carry the tradition of a late-night hot dog stand but wanted to do it bigger and more diverse. We offer some pretty insane drunk-people food, none of it is diet-friendly!

Where do you see this business in five years?

Well we have been in talks about getting investors to put a Boss Dog in other college towns and expand it.

Describe a memorable moment in your workplace:

We have a pretty good people-watching gig, but the most memorable would be the kid who ran from the police and jumped off the second section of the parking garage. He barrel-rolled and was OK, he also never was caught.

What have you learned from your work?

That whatever you do, do it well. Always think of new ways to improve and evolve even if it's a hot dog stand.

What is the most challenging part of what you do?

The late hours and cold nights. Many times we fight going out but it is all about being consistent in your business.

The most enjoyable?

Interacting with people. Most drunk people love when you provide them with some crazy hot dog with 14 toppings on it. It is always funny to see people's reaction to "The Works" hot dog, which has everything on it.

How do you define success for your business?

Well, that is when we make more than we spend! Hahaha! Success is taking something small and growing it into something that is revered as the best. Many people say we have the best hot dogs they have ever had, and that to us is success.

What are some advantages as well as drawbacks of doing business in this area?

Advantages would be our location. We get to be right in the mix of the people and that helps us. The drawbacks are having to rely mostly on when school is in session to do business.

What sets you apart from your competitors?

Well to start we use the best products as far as hot dogs are concerned. Also we have invented many crazy combinations of hot dogs at very low prices. We are always thinking of the next combination. Lastly, we allow our customers to come up with their own combinations. It is pretty much a build your own hot dog stand.

What advice would you give to someone trying to enter your field of work?

Dress warm.
