The grass isn't always greener over in Europe

---- — My wife and I were recently visited by old friends from Europe — Austria, to be exact. We met Peter and his lovely wife, Edda, years ago when he worked for the UN, and they bought acreage for summers in upstate New York.

Peter is a geologist, an author, and a screaming European socialist, but surprisingly, we are good friends. I’ve always admired his intelligence and his ability to separate science from politics. (That’s not an easy thing for a liberal.)

Over the last few years, I’ve noticed Peter becoming somewhat disenchanted with the current goings-on in Europe. Seems my old friend laments the loss of European culture, the increase in drugs and violence, the establishment of Sharia law, and the European Union’s looming bankruptcy.

He tells us, “Aside from Istanbul, Berlin has the highest population of Turks of any city in the world. There are more Turks in Berlin than in Ankara, and unfortunately, in their communities, many they try to live by Sharia law and we have witnessed killings because individuals have brought shame upon their families.

“We have seen this in Vienna as well. They do not become German, French, Belgium, British or Austrian. It causes great trouble with the local population and police, and I’m afraid, as they produce five-to-seven offspring and Europeans have one or maybe two, that in a few generations, the rich cultures of Europe will be lost.

“Did you see that beheading of the British soldier by the Nigerian Muslim in London? I have seen such things in Africa while working for the UN and now, it is happening in England. A video was made of it and the killer stands there bragging about it with his hands drenched in blood. On the streets of London, it is unbelievable.

“On top of all this, we are going broke! Everything is paid through taxes and many countries and banks have had to be rescued. Spain, Ireland, France, Greece, Portugal and Crete are disasters, and we are trying to lure Russia and the Ukraine into the Union, but without success.”

I asked Peter why he was surprised. To paraphrase: you have open borders, provide universal health care to all, large minimum salaries, generous pensions that in many cases require no contribution, month-long vacations, have lax to nonexistent drug laws, rampant prostitution, and societies that, in many cases, accept immigrants living in communities under their own set of laws, and you wonder why you’re being overwhelmed?

“I know.” he said. “and if someone begins a dialogue in Europe about these dangers, they are immediately labeled a Neo-Nazi. This is happening, too in your America, and if someone says that this may not be a good idea, they are called a racist.”

We talked about how immigrants to Europe and America, whether they be from the Muslim world, Central America or Africa, can promote and protect their culture, but we cannot. Seems we have developed a politically correct philosophy with a very real death wish.

As John Lennon would say, “Imagine.” Imagine a Europe governed more like the North Africa and the Middle East. Imagine the growing influence of Sharia law, more honor killings, and further beheadings in the streets.

Envision the loss of a culture that gave us the roots of individual and religious freedom, gave the world the Renaissance, the Industrial Revolution, classical music, parliamentary government and so much more.

Imagine an America run more and more like Mexico, with graft and corruption that make our current cesspool look honest. Imagine uncontrollable drug lords, more poverty, and corrupt police being the norm.

Imagine sitting down with a Muslim Imam discussing collective bargaining, universal health care, workplace safety, and better working conditions. I’m sure climate change and environmental safety will be high on his priority list.

Talk to that same Muslin Imam about a woman’s right to chose, equal work for equal pay, and same-sex marriage and see how enlightened he will be. Even simple things like the right to inherit and you’ll soon realize that to him, ladies, you really don’t matter.

In fact, if it were not for the cultures of Europe and America, can you imagine the gains in women’s rights and minority rights that never would have been?

As mentioned earlier, we have known Peter for almost 20 years, and he has spent his career with the UN as a geologist in Central and South America, Africa and Southern Asia helping develop natural resources for poor Third World countries.

If anyone has seen the downside and tried to do something about it, it is my liberal, socialist friend, Peter. A Neo-Nazi or racist, he is not, and when it comes to the dangers facing European and American culture, he isn’t crying “wolf.”
