It's important to remember that there is good all around us

Daily Star

---- —

We are in the middle of the Holy season of Lent, a time for a little honest self-examination to draw us closer in faith to God and service to others, especially those in need. Also, in the midst of large amounts of sobering media news, let's keep our inner balance and our sense of humor to remember there are good things around us.

Some good news: In January, 230,000 jobs were created in the private sector; 25 years ago there were 3 million cancer survivors in the U.S., and now there are 12 million, including my wife; and the homicide rate in New York last year was only a third of what it was 25 years ago.

There are many ways we can help improve our society, including numerous social work agencies with volunteers working hard to make a difference in people's lives _ a great way to put faith in the Lenten season, as well as deepening faith during worship in the church or temple of your choice.

I recently listened on the radio to an interview with an 85-year-old doctor who had survived a serious polio illness. He was asked if he ever felt discouraged or depressed during his illness. He replied, "Certainly not. It's too boring to get depressed." Now, there's a model for us when the times are trying and burden our souls.

God wishes good for us. Let us rise to the occasion. Blessings on each one of us.
