---- — Last Tuesday evening, I had to drive from Hartwick to Andes. A couple of farmers needed tractors and my boys were already out on service and sales calls, so they called the retired guy for help. Ah yes, once again decades of experience paid off.
The next day, Adam and Brian asked how I made out. “Great.” I replied. “At the first stop, I had pot roast, real mashed potatoes, and Dutch apple pie. Later, I saw some fine firearms, had a beer or two, and some homemade hooch.”
“What? No, no, no dad. Did you sell the tractors?” they asked. “Yes I did, and you’d better get them delivered ASAP.” I answered. “Did we make any money?” they questioned. I winked and said, “Maybe, if you sell the trade-ins for twice what they’re worth, but I’ll tell you, that pot roast was delicious and the hooch was some smooth!
“Come to think of it, maybe you should call Bob and find out exactly what deal we made on that last tractor. After all that beer and hooch, I’m not quite sure, and don’t be surprised if he doesn’t remember, either.” The boys will straighten it out. Must I do everything? I’m retired.
That same Tuesday evening, as I drove by all the farms that once were, I got to thinking about an honest, old gentleman named Hardy Hanson. He was our main competition in the farm equipment business.
When he made a deal and shook hands, that was it. No paperwork was needed. If something went wrong with a piece of equipment, he made it right. His word was his bond.
Contrast old Hardy and his way of doing things with the current pigswill going on in Washington. I’d say they could use a good dose of Hardy Hanson right about now, because no one seems to be able to tell the truth, or maybe worse yet, the people in charge are too stupid to know what the hell is going on. Truthfully, I don’t know which is worse.
The Obama Administration’s State Department is being investigated for the Benghazi terrorist attack. The most important factor is that Americans were murdered, while their cries for help went unanswered. “Why?” has never been explained.
Next, we have the cover-up. Team Obama couldn’t have a terrorist attack in the middle of a presidential election, so the American people were lied to. A YouTube video was blamed. Whose idea was that?
Also, we find our beloved IRS has been used as a “hatchet man” against conservative organizations, and Lois Lerner, the IRS director in charge of non-profits, pleads the Fifth Amendment while proclaiming her innocence like a Don Corleone consigliere. As more IRS management testify, no one knows anything, and no one is responsible.
Then, we find that this same assembly of dedicated public servants, who will twist your cow’s teat till she bellows to get your last penny, has spent upwards of $50 million of your tax dollars on meaningless conferences and stupid dance and Star Trek videos. Their only shame is in being caught.
We recently learned that the State Department is involved in its own cover-up. Someone is running cover for the alleged pedophile activities of an ambassador and of course the old standby for Washington, the hiring of prostitutes. Heck, they may be the most honest folks within the beltway!
If that’s not bad enough, the NSA is holding more than 100 million phone records and emails from American citizens. When asked, before Congress, about this monstrous invasion of privacy, James Clapper, the Obama Administration’s national intelligence director, essentially said he knew nothing and no one’s privacy had been violated. Have these comedians ever heard of the Fourth Amendment?
As more information became known, he backtracked and claimed his answer was “least untruthful.” Is this as close as we will get to, “I lied?” Seems somewhat refreshing, doesn’t it?
Finally (so far), we have the seizure of the phone records of the Associated Press and Fox News’ James Rosen and his family by the Justice Department. Of course, Attorney General Eric Holder, under oath, knew nothing about this.
If you can’t trust the attorney general of the United States, who can you trust? To our amazement, he had signed off on the secret subpoena authorizing the seizure of Rosen’s and his family’s phone records! How could this be? I guess, he must have forgotten.
Meanwhile, President Obama is nowhere to be found. Surprised?
Old Hardy is not around to see any of this and maybe that’s just as well, but there was a time when a man’s word meant something and pride was taken in being honest. We expected that from Hardy, and he never let us down. Shouldn’t we demand it from those who lead
