Stream cleanup help available

The Catskill Watershed Corp. will once again support groups and individuals who clean litter and other debris from streambanks in their neighborhoods.

Youth and school groups, church organizations, civic and business associations, neighborhood groups and teams of friends are encouraged to scour stream and riversides for trash and to dispose of it properly.

The CWC will provide trash bags, gloves and tokens of appreciation for those who choose to serve their communities in this way. Call Kim Ackerley at (845) 586-1400 to arrange to get these items, or for suggestions on areas that need attention.

The Department of Environmental Protection coordinates cleanups throughout the year, or volunteers may coordinate their efforts with National River Clean-up Week sponsored by American Rivers, May 31-June 8. Maryland town meeting set

The Town of Maryland Comprehensive Plan Review Committee will hold a meeting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Schenevus-Maryland Firehouse.

This month's meeting will involve reviewing the survey that the Center for Economic & Community Development at the State University College at Oneonta is designing for the town. Town board member Bill Fredette is the committee chairman.

Food donated at Curves

Curves International announced that the 2008 Curves Food Drive brought in 600 pounds in Cobleskill, which will benefit the Cobleskill's Food Bank. Worldwide, Curves members donated almost 3,000 tons of food, officials said.

This was Curves International's 10th annual Food Drive and Curves of Cobleskill's third time to participate. This March, women had the opportunity to donate a bag of groceries for a reduced Curves membership fee. Last month's Food Drive accounted for 14 new memberships at the Cobleskill Curves.

Barbecue to aid scholarships

The Morris VFW will host a chicken barbecue at 1 p.m. Saturday to benefit scholarships for Morris Central School students.

Dinners, at $8 each, will include a half-chicken, salt potatoes, macaroni salad, potato salad, baked beans, roll, dessert and coleslaw. Chicken halves will be sold a la carte at $5 each.

Art scholarship available

The deadline for the Cooperstown Art Association's Art Scholarship is approaching. The annual scholarship award of up to $600 is available to students planning to pursue art at the college level who will graduate from any Otsego County or Clark Scholarship eligible school district in 2008.

Eligible schools are Cherry Valley-Springfield, Cooperstown, Edmeston, Gilbertsville-Mount Upton, Laurens, Milford, Milford BOCES, Mount Markham, Oneonta, Owen D. Young, Richfield Springs, Schenevus, Unatego and Worcester. Home-schooled students living within those school districts are also eligible for the scholarship.

There is no application fee. Each student should bring a portfolio of five pieces as well as an application form to the CAA by 4 p.m. May 16. All portfolios will be juried by W. Ralph Murray, a board member of the CAA and a well-known and respected artist.
