WELLS BRIDGE _ The 100th anniversary of the Unadilla Fire Department was marked during the Otsego County firemen's convention Friday at Unatego Junior-Senior High School.

The department traces its beginnings to Samuel S. North, a banker, whose business was burned in an 1879 fire. North purchased uniforms and built a firehouse on Clifton Street in 1884.

Two more fire companies, the H.Y. Canfield Co. and the Unadilla Hook and Ladder Co. formed in 1891 and 1892, respectively. The two merged in 1900. In 1950, a new firehouse was built on its present Clifton Street location and the company became known as the Unadilla Fire Department.
