Library Corner

Holiday Closing

Huntington Memorial Library will be closed Friday and Saturday for the Independence Day weekend. Regular hours will resume Monday at 9 a.m. Have a safe and fun weekend, from all of us at the library.

Make sure the whole family has enough to read over the weekend by stopping at the library today. And don't forget, we have summer reading book clubs for children of all ages as well as lots of programs and activities for youths. Visit us for more information on our website at www.hmloneonta.org.

Summer Reading

There is no end to the amount of suggested reading lists for adults and children. Book recommendations and lists fit every description imaginable. But did you ever wonder how to find these lists? You should try this site on the Web at www.rebeccablood.net/archive/reading’lists/summer’2009/ for more recommendations than you can read in a lifetime. There are recommendations from magazines, newspapers, individuals, Britain, Australia, blogs, libraries, radio stations and subject specific lists, to name just a few. You'll enjoy looking through these lists and choosing something for your summer reading time and even for the fall and winter.

Here are some new titles at the library for you to read:

In "Dropped Dead Stitch" by Maggie Sefton, Jennifer is attafcked by a stranger. As she recovers, she and her friends decide to go on a knitting retreat. When they arrive at the ranch, Jennifer is horrified to discover that her attacker is also the ranch owner. A few days later, the man turns up dead. There are many suspects, especially in the group of knitters at the ranch. Did one of them do it?

Dr. David Kessler takes a look at how much we eat and gives specific steps on how to stop overeating. When we consume foods with a lot of fat, sugar and salt, we are more likely to eat larger quantities, since those foods stimulate appetite. "The End of Overeating" explains how to take control and return to eating normal portions. The author was commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as well as dean at two medical schools in the U.S.

In "Fragment" by Warren Fahy, scientists have discovered an island with an ecosystem so different that they are unprepared for what they see. This island has evolved differently than the rest of Earth and the creatures are unlike any other. As scientists scramble to learn more, a true test of survival begins.

Children's Books

Rotten Ralph the cat has been featured in many books. As a matter of fact, he has been so rotten, that in the newest book, "The Nine Lives of Rotten Ralph," Ralph isn't feeling very well. The vet gives him the bad news. Because Ralph has been so rotten, he has used up eight of his nine lives. Will he turn over a new leaf and start behaving?

Corduroy loves to help. During Helping Hands Week at school, the class learns all about community help and then they get to help. The class collects food for a local food bank and sorts recyclables. "Corduroy Helps Out" by B.J. Hennessy shows how helpful children can be in their town.

Library Hours: Monday-Thursday, 9 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m-5:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Closed Sunday.

Marie Bruni is director of Huntington Memorial Library in Oneonta. Her column appears in the community section of The Daily Star every Thursday.
