Five area sailors were attached to the U.S. Sixth Fleet when it arrived off the coast of Beirut, Lebanon, to support American Marines and Army paratroopers.
They are: Arnold W. Callahan, seaman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Wiedeman, Unadilla, who is serving aboard the guided missile cruiser, USS Boston.
Frederick Van Volkenburg, radioman third class, son of Mr. and Mrs. Homes L. Van Volkenburg, Cooperstown, who is serving aboard the attack aircraft carrier, USS Saratoga.
Romeo N. Simpson, machinist third class, son of Mrs. Esmeralda Simpson, Cooperstown, who is aboard the support aircraft carrier, USS Wasp.
Kurt W. Hearth, machinist mate third class, son of Mr. and Mrs. George T. Hearth, Mount Upton, Route 1; also aboard the Saratoga.
Robert N. Roys, fireman, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin N. Roys, Star Route, Nineveh, who is aboard the USS DesMoines, a heavy cruiser.

Priscilla Cameron of Oneonta and Nancy Kroll of Cooperstown came away the low gross titlists Thursday in the annual WGA Member-Guest 18-hole Golf Tournament at the Oneonta Country Club.
Cameron and Kroll outplayed Gwen Johnson and Jane Adsit by five strokes to capture the title with a solid score of 76.
Ginny Putnam and Bunny Putnam were the low net champs, carding a 58 for the day to just edge the team of Jayne Torrey and Betty Cole. They had a 60.
Bea Morley and Jean Hoyt finished third in the low net with a 63, while Betty Ann Evans and Marilyn Harkness were fourth with a 63, and Sue Nesbitt and Jennifer Robinson took fifth with a 64.
Twenty-two teams were entered in the tournament.
