COOPERSTOWN _ Otsego County 4-H members took the top awards in square dancing and horticulture at the New York State Fair.
One of the few blue ribbons given for square dancing went to the square that included Brad and Bill Oldick of Springfield, Cathy Balcom of Cooperstown, Steve and Cathie Benevides of Oneonta and Sherry Bartow of Cooperstown. Other members of the square dancing were: Jeannie Rathbun of Schenevus, and Robert Hurley of Cherry Valley. Coaches were Mr. and Mrs. Werner Weigel of Cherry Valley.
Both the senior and junior teams in the horticulture contest took first place and the beginner team took second place in the state. Senior team members were Bill Oldick of Cooperstown, Daphne Joy and Joe Gaiser of Morris. Oldick will become a member of the state 4-H horticulture and vegetable crops team and will compete in the national contest during the National Junior Horticulture Association's annual conference.
The junior team members were: Leigh Wheeler of New Berlin, Bruce Frederick and Kim Kristofik of Morris.
The senior 4-H vegetable crops team took fifth place overall. Members were Bill Oldick, Daphne Joy and Joe Gaiser. The junior team, composed of Leigh Wheeler, Bruce Frederick and Audra Kristofik, placed 10th. Coaches were Mr. and Mrs. Barry Frederick and their daughter, Michelle of Morris.
