Mary Little Chambers, a resident of Robynwood Assisted Living Program at 43 Walnut St. in Oneonta, celebrated her 100th birthday Sept. 20.
She was born Sept. 20, 1909, on a farm on Cabin Hill in Andes. She was driven to school in a buggy or sleigh, depending on the weather, by her brother Gregg Little, family members said. She graduated from Andes High School and continued her education at Delhi Normal School, graduating in 1927.
After graduation, she taught in a one-room schoolhouse, and walked two miles every day to the school, arriving early to start the fire in the wood stove.
She married David R. Chambers in 1930. They lived in Walton for several years and then moved to Unadilla, where David started the livestock auction business D.R. Chambers & Sons. Mary worked various jobs there.
They raised their family of eight children in Unadilla and Mary lived in the town for more than 70 years.
After 35 years of marriage, her husband, Dave, passed away in 1965. She is still a member of the Presbyterian Church in Unadilla and has many fond memories of her friends there, according to family members. She’s lived at Robynwood Assisted Living for 2½ years.
On Aug. 22, her family held a birthday celebration and family reunion at the home of her youngest daughter, Linda Allen, of Oneonta. Her other children: Jim, John and Mike Chambers, of Unadilla; Dale, of Vernon; Madeline Grader, of Jacksonville, FL; Shirley Osterhoudt, of Homer, and Dottie McIntosh, of Lockport. were all there with their families. More than 60 family members attended with relatives coming from California, Mass., Pa., Maryland and New York state. She has 20 grandchildren, 29 great-grand children and one great-great grandchild.
