SCHOHARIE _ A not-for-profit organization named Vroman's Nose Preservation Corporation acquired ownership Tuesday to more than 100 acres comprising Vroman's Nose mountain, a Schoharie County landmark.
The group purchased the mountain for $41,976 from Arlington and the late Arden VanDyke of Middleburgh.
The mountain is located along Route 30 near Middleburgh.
"The plan is to leave it just the way it is, " said Harold Vroman, a family spokesman.
The new corporation is working closely with the Schoharie County Historical Society to learn more about the mountain's history and to gather folklore, post cards, pictures, photographs and any other record of the mountain's characteristics.
Vroman's Nose, identifiable by its corroding south face and its rocky topside ledge, is said to be the mountain from which Timothy Murphy, a legendary hero of the American Revolution, leaped with a bucket of milk in each hand.
According to legend, Murphy landed without spilling a drop.
