RICHFIELD SPRINGS _ Deowongo Island, six wooded acres in Canadarago Lake south of Richfield Springs, has been sold by Frank Curcio Realty of Richfield Springs to Edward Markwardt, a Little Falls auto dealer.

The island was formerly the property of attorney James J. Byard III, Schuyler Lake, and his late father, James J. Byard Jr., also an attorney, who between them owned it for nearly a century. The name Deowongo is an Oneida Indian name meaning "place of hearing," because of the echoes that circled the lake before the forests were destroyed.

The Byards have lived for many years at the General Herkimer Farm in Schuyler Lake.

COOPERSTOWN _ Thirteen papers on medically related subjects, among them a biographical sketch by President Eisenhower's heart specialist, Dr. Paul Dudley White of Boston, make up the program of today's session of the American Clinical and Climatological Association.

Today is the last day of the three-day meet at the Treadway-Otesaga Hotel in Cooperstown. Much of the time spent by the 250 medical men present has been used in reading papers. Already more than a dozen such papers have been given and discussed.

This is the final convention at the Treadway-Otesaga for the year. The Cooperstown summer hotel closes Tuesday evening and will re-open next spring.

Coinciding with the end of operations at the Otesaga, the Cooper Inn, operated summer-long as an annex, will re-open to provide winter hotel service.
