A couple of family-oriented events will be happening in Cooperstown this weekend. The events focus on reading, writing and art, and both offer opportunities for families to spend time together.
{"HeadlineLight14"/}Book fair
A book fair and "family fun" night will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Friday at Cooperstown Elementary School.
Hosted by the Cooperstown Parent and Teacher Organization, the evening will include an open mike for children to read stories and poems they've written. Students are encouraged to bring stories they've written for display and also to read aloud.
There will also be face painting, refreshments and a raffle.
The book fair will include hundreds of books for various price ranges, interests and reading levels, including picture books, easy readers, chapter books and best sellers, organizers said.
Participants are invited to attend dressed as a favorite book character.
Everyone in costume will be entered to win a book fair gift certificate.
Community members will be able to buy books for the school's library and classrooms from teacher wish lists.
All proceeds from the fair will not only be used to purchase books for the elementary school library, but will also be matched by Scholastic and contributed to national charities that promote literacy as part of its One for Books program.
Everyone who donates $1 for One for Books will be entered to win a $25 gift certificate to the book fair.
The book fair will be held school days through Nov. 10.

{"HeadlineLight14"/}Museum night
The Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown will launch its inaugural "Night at Our Museum" family program at 7 p.m. Saturday.
The evening of "after-hours family fun" will include live music, participatory art experiences, tours with costumed guides, food tastings and movie shorts.
Organizers said the event is intended to bring arts organizations together to instill community spirit, to inspire art appreciation among youth and to help parents become more comfortable sharing art experiences with their children.
Uncle Rock, a.k.a. Robert Burke Warren, will perform rock music.
Tours of the museum's collections will be "theatrically" given by costumed guides throughout the evening, organizers said.
The following organizational partners will provide interactive experiences: Cooperstown Parent Teacher Organization, National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum, The Clark Sports Center, Smithy-Pioneer Gallery, Inc., Cooperstown Art Association, The Brookwood School and Paperkite Creative.
Additionally, business partners will offer interactive experiences, tastings and showcase their products. Participants include Barnyard Swing, Cooperstown Cookie Co., Savor New York, Davidson's Jewelry and Augur's Book Store, and Cooperstown Book Nook.
The cost is free for children and NYSHA members, and $5 for adults. Children 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.
