Route 23 is continuing to expand on the business front, with construction being conducted on four sites in the towns of Oneonta and Davenport.
A Midas Muffler repair shop being built next to Howard Johnson's Restaurant in the town of Oneonta should be completed be mid-February and should begin operations within two weeks after that, according to Don Schram, national construction manager for the Midas Realty Company in Chicago.
The shop will be franchised and will employ five or six people, he said.
Oneonta Block Co., a business selling masonry supplies in the town of Davenport, is building a large warehouse for the storage of masonry products, according to president Robert Harlem Jr. The construction is part of a more than $400,000 improvement, which included buying new equipment and upgrading some old equipment, Harlem said.
The company now employs 18 people, five more than it did this time last year, Harlem said. He is considering widening the product line, and said additional staff expansion is possible.
Across the street from the Oneonta Block Company is more construction. Dwight Harris, of Owego, is in the process of building a Chrysler dealership.
The town of Davenport will be home to a building which will house a variety of stores and offices.
Rex Accurso, owner of Rex's Auction Service, is building the two-story structure, according to general manager, Bob Green.
Auction and realty offices will be located on part of the upper floor of the new building, Green said. Other offices on the upper level will be rented as stores, Green said.
The building's space is half rented and will include a novelty store and a satellite dish company, Green said. Both are also renting office space and a third company has shown interest in renting both store and office space, he said.
Since the opening of the Southside Mall in July 1983, commercial growth in the area has been booming.
Growth along the road since the mall's opening also includes McDonald's Restaurant, the Frying Pan Diner, and G&I Mobile Homes.

MILFORD _ The dedication program of Milford American Legion Department of New York, was held in the new post building on West Main Street, Sunday.
Post Commander Kent Parslow presided at the ceremonies and other Legion dignitaries were present from Otsego County and elsewhere.
Stuart J. Coates, department vice-commander for Watkins Glen brought greeting from the National Legion and the Department of New York.
Charles W. Skeele, DeRuyter, past district/commander, gave the dedication address. He noted that in the "New-Post" is being dedicated to all departed comrades and to the service of the community.
The "Main Hall" was dedicated to Dorr Sweet Hickey, veteran of World War I, and a former resident of Milford. Thomas Hickey, his son, assisted in the unveiling of the portrait of his father.
The Milford Post was chartered in March of 1947, and the 1959 membership lists 67 (the highest up to date) of which two members are women.
