ONEONTA — Stella Miller, housemother of Alpha Kappa Phi sorority, known as Agonian, 56 Maple St., is bowing out after serving hundreds of girls for 29 years.

Mrs. Miller, known as “Mom,” has seen many changes since she was first hired as a housemother by the sorority. She accepted the job because she wanted to be busy and to be with people. She taught many girls how to get along with each other, keep a house clean, buy food for a group, served the community, take pride in their school work.

“She also taught girls how to be ladies in any situation in which they found themselves,” said Vera Tahyer of Oneonta, a member of Agonian when Mrs. Miller was hired, and still a close friend.

In earlier years SUCO required students to sign  in and out when going out for the evening.

“Mom was right there to carry out the rules,” Mrs. Thayer said. “Later as rules changed, Mom changed with them and kept her cool even though she didn’t agree with the change.”

Mrs. Miller will turn 93 on Aug. 22.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — The Canadarago Lake Improvement Association, which sprang officially into being Saturday night, 275 strong, has set its sight on an ambitious program to control water levels and purity in the seven-mile lake.

More than 200 camp owners, representing about 50 per cent of the owners along the lake’s perimeter, crowded into the Richfield Springs Central school on Saturday night to elect Mrs. Williams Reynolds, secretary of the Richfield Springs Chamber of Commerce, chairman of the Association, a post she had held as acting chairman since the inception of the group on Aug. 6.

Key items to which the association will devote its effort are the low level of the ake, now down so far that some camp owners seed as much as 180 feet of dock for the motor craft, and the “dirty” condition of the lake water.
