Step Back in Time: Aug. 13, 2013

“Two men are on duty all the time to handle small matters and complaints. However, we are not investigators. Anything big that comes along we turn over to the state police.”

Members of the force are: Emerson Backman, Charles Jordan, Bernie DeShaw, Richard Zearn, Mr. Kane and Mr. Webb.

In January the men began attending a school for special training in Norwich under the direction of Chenango County Sheriff Joseph Benenati Jr., a former state trooper, and F.B.I. instructor. The school lasted until April 10. Police Justice Roy Marshall of Unadilla had this to say about the 1955 Chevrolet which is used by the Police Dept., “People get fooled a lot by that car. They go speeding through town thinking they can claim the police speedometer isn’t calibrated accurately, because of its year.

“So they get stopped and are brought in here before me. What a lot of people don’t know is that the speedometer in that car is calibrated at least two times every month.”

When asked about the speeding problem in Unadilla, Mr. Webb said that the main offenders are adults who just aren’t thinking and don’t realize the speed they’re traveling. “Very few people speed on purpose,” he believes.
