At an Oneonta Rotary Club meeting there is no “Mister This” or “Mister That.”

The Rotarians like to address each other by nicknames or at least first names.

The latest word from the local service club points out some of the more fantastic “nicknames,” based on the men’s occupations, hobbies or histories.

In a list of the news letter editions for 1963-1964, this list went out to local Rotarians.

There is “730” Turnbull — WDOS manager, 730 on the radio dial, remember?

“Kangaroo” Smith, for Ian Smith, a native Australian, naturally.

“Haberdasher” Henderson, that’s John, who sells men’s clothes.

“PBY” Gratz is Kenneth, who was a Navy pilot.

“Oldsie” Green, not because Jake is an old man but because he sells Oldsmobiles and Cadillacs.

There’s “Eyeball” Bannon, who works with Dr. Nicholas Holowach, and we don’t have to mention what type of specialist he is.

There’s ZIP Bertuzzi, that’s Postmaster Samuel J., who’s been taking the needles because of the new “ZIP” postal delivery service.

There’s “Muscles” Chase … that’s Elwin of YMCA fame in Oneonta.

There’s “Balance Sheet” Rogers. That’s L.L. Rogers the accountant.

And there’s “Vilmer-in-the-Carribean” Bresee — that is Wilmer the world traveler.

And there’s “da, da, da, dee” Swift, that’s Dr. Frederick Fay Swift, chairman of the education department and former director of music at Hartwick College. (The Star cheated on Dr. Swift’s nickname … but it is difficult to reproduce in type this size, three eighth notes and a quarter note, which is really his nickname, according to the local Rotary).
