A 30 to 32 foot road surface, much wider than at present, plus much better visibility, will be Oneonta’s reward for a reconstruction project now in progress at the intersection of Center and West streets.
The rebuilding job takes a sizeable slice out of the steep embankment at the west of West Street at that point, reducing the angle of the curve and permitting drivers and much better glimpse of oncoming traffic.
Then, on the northeast corner in front of Atonement Lutheran Church, the street will be widened in a sweeping curve starting about 100 feet east of the intersection on Center Street and continuing to the junction with West Street.
To add to the safety, and to prevent a land fall from the embankment, workmen laid a concrete footing and are now erecting forms within which will be poured reinforced concrete to the height of a tall man. When backfilled this will remove all fear of a landslide.
Add to this the practical completion of grading for lawns at Atonement church, and, by next summer when the grass is fresh and green, Center and West will be among the most attractive intersections in Oneonta.
