COOPERSTOWN — Tommy Roe, the former pop star turned country music singer, performed a vanishing act when he came to Cooperstown to do a benefit concert Friday night.

Roe flew in from California, checked into his room briefly at the Aalsmeer Motel on Lake Road north of Cooperstown, then left without a trace.

The two shows, sponsored by the Otsego County Deputies’ Benevolent Association and each drawing about 150 spectators, went on without Roe, who was the star attraction.

About 10-15 people accepted refunds when Roe failed to appear, but most people stayed for the show anyway, according to Orin Higgins, Otsego County’s undersheriff.

“It’s embarrassing,” Higgins said. “It’s too bad that kind of thing should happen.”

Roe had been scheduled to appear with the band, Freewheeling, at Cooperstown Central School.

Deputies said he checked into the motel in the early afternoon but was gone by 4:30 p.m. Thinking that Roe might have had a mishap or was on his way to the concert, the deputies launched a search but could not find him.

Betty Fry, who runs the Aalsmeer with her husband, said she was unaware Roe had checked out until after she was called and went to check his room.

Roe’s luggage was gone, and the room key was left behind, she said.

A spokeswoman for East-West Theatrical Productions, which arranged the concert for the deputies’ organization, had no immediate comment Monday.

Roe gained notoriety as a pop star from the 1960s and 1970s. One of his songs, “Dizzy,” enjoyed a stint as the number-one hit in the nation in 1969.
