Step Back in Time: Feb. 12, 2014

Oneonta’s Safety Board has given permission for a contractor’s house trailer to remain on the East Street Senior High school grounds until the end of March even though a city ordinance makes locating house trailers inside city limits illegal.

Actually, it was revealed Tuesday night, the Safety Board (and official Oneonta) would probably never have known the trailer was there if another trailer occupied by six construction workers had not been destroyed by fire Monday.

In investigating the circumstances, the presence of a trailer occupied by Rogers and McCay foreman David Burritt was brought to the attention of Environmental Technician Ralph Shaver.

Mr. Shaver immediately got in touch with Oneonta High School principal Charles A. Belden to inform him of the ordinance against house trailers in the city and the two men paid a call on Mr. Burritt.

At last night’s session Mr. Belden appeared to plead with the Safety Board for an extension of time, noting that, as soon as weather conditions moderate, the old house now used by the contractors and site engineers as office space will be razed to make room for the new approach roadway to the school.

When this happens, the trailer occupied by Mr. Burritt, at the immediate rear of the old house and attached to its water and sewer supply, will be moved, Mr. Belden promised the Safety Board.

However further discussion among board members disclosed their obvious sympathy with Mr. Belden’s opinions and pleas, and after a brief review of how to accommodate the trailer occupants, agreed that they be told to move — but given until the first of March to do so.
