An Oneonta church will be sponsoring a series of seminars on the problems of poverty in Otsego County and the direction of programs designed to help the poor.

The First United Methodist Church, at the corner of Church and Chestnut streets in Oneonta, will host the seminars on Friday evenings starting Feb. 17. The five seminars will all begin at 7 p.m. at the church.

“I’d like to see specific responses (from the public) to the seminars,” said Rev. William Bouton. Speakers will discuss the poverty situation in the county, and Bouton hopes they motivate people to make positive changes in both the public and private sectors.

The church became involved in studying poverty 20 years ago when the denomination did a nationwide study on poverty. “It was at the time when we had ‘the war on poverty.’ Now, despite good intentions and programs, there is still a serious problem,” he said.

BAINBRIDGE—The First Methodist Church in Bainbridge and Mrs. John Steffen of Bainbridge have organized a day nursery school for children between the ages of two and five.

On Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, school is in session at the First Methodist Church in the Sunday School Room from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

Parents must provide transportation to and from school.

On Mondays and Fridays school is not in session.

A small tuition fee also provides the children with insurance while at school and engaging in play.

The first day of school, Tuesday, Mrs. Steffen reported that seven children were enrolled, and that more are expected to enroll next week.

The Rev. James Bartz said that the church is large enough to accommodate about 15 to 20 youngsters.

Children from the Sidney, Bainbridge area and from Masonville may be enrolled.
