COOPERSTOWN — Cooperstown village trustees have agreed to consider taking charge of the trolley project, with a view toward leasing three trolleys for use this summer, according to Village Clerk Douglas Walrath.

“The only way it’s going to work at all is if the village runs the system,” Walrath said Wednesday.

Mayor Harold Hollis gave a report on the trolleys during the regular meeting of the village trustees Monday night. Under the plan now being considered, the village would lease the trolleys, hire five drivers and a supervisor.

The local Citizens Committee on Parking initiated the trolley program two summers ago, with the associated costs paid for by area merchants and business people through the purchase of hand-painted advertising signs riding on the trolleys.
