Area peace groups collected over $2,000 and 400 signatures for the “Thousand Gifts of Peace” Campaign. Members of the various organizations will give the petition to Congressman Sherwood Boehlert, R-New Hartford, at a ceremony Monday afternoon.

The petition states that the undersigned support rebuilding Nicaragua both morally and financially, said Peter Hill, a member of the Oneonta Peace Network.

The money goes to the Communities of Peace and Friendship program, sponsored by Quest for Peace, a national organization. Quest for Peace will distribute the money through two independent, non-governmental organizations, the Nicaraguan Red Cross and the Institute of John XXIII.

Both agencies will give the money to be used for rebuilding schools, helping with land reform to resettle peasant farmers, constructing a water storage dam and reservoir, and similar programs in the Central American nation.

Any community that raises over $1,000 becomes part of the program. As a result of the fundraising, the Otsego and Delaware County area, will now be called a “Community of Peace and Friendship,” Hill said.

High waters in Oneonta Creek sparked quick action Thursday to alleviate a potentially serious situation along the road leading to the new high school site on East Street.

Thawing snow and heavy rain combined to fill the normally placid creek to a torrent and the culverts under the new road were unable to cope with the heavy flow. Water flowed through the small banks at the side of the stream and down into Wilber Park at the height of the flooding during the afternoon.

At one time in midafternoon, city workers and officials said, it appeared as if the road was seriously threatened with flooding or possible to cave in under the onslaught of the waters.

This is not the first time that worry over facilities to carry the new access road over the potentially explosive little stream have been a matter for the attention of school officials.
