Local garbage haulers have started to pick up separated garbage even though recycling will not be mandatory until April 3.

They want to smooth out their schedules and garbage pickup schedules.

Hauler Gary Roberts is among those starting early and experiencing some problems.

“I’m losing money right now, but we are picking up three months worth of recyclables,” he said. Roberts said many of his customers have been recycling since January and only now are putting bags on the curb.

City officials originally planned to start recycling Jan. 1.

“We’re getting hammered with newspapers,” Roberts said. The city has not picked up newspapers since last fall and is requiring all haulers to pick them up.

More than 100 men, clambering through deep snow in the weird haze of woodland coated with inches of ice, have battled more than 72 hours in an attempt to restore telephone communications between Delhi and the rest of the world.

Trees coated with ice are bowed nearly to the ground and in some places have toppled, carrying the New York Telephone Co. toll cable down with them. Telephone lines lay in deep snow, twisted and covered with thick ice.

A freezing rain early Monday morning, coupled with sleet and snow which followed it, combined to lay waste a big area in the Treadwell, Delhi, Franklin Mountain area.

Bulldozers have been used in some places to haul heavy equipment into the devastated area and men have ploughed on foot through deep snow to find breaks and reconnect the lines.

“If all goes well, we should have the situation here well in hand Friday,” said line foreman Al Stofle of Rome.
