Join us for an engaging program sponsored by the Friends of the Library at 6:30 p.m. Monday, April 7, in the third floor community room!

Have you ever wondered what the women in paintings are thinking and feeling? Poet Rachel Stevenson does this in her collection of poetry “I Learned to Dance from Renoir.” Come listen to her read some of her poems and write some of your own based on paintings that speak to you. This will be a truly interactive poetry program. As always, the Library would like to thank the Friends group for all they do for us. If you’re interested in getting involved, pick up a membership form at the library or download one from our website at When on the website, hover on the About tab then click on Friends of HML.

This time every year, Publishers Weekly looks at the previous year’s sales of children’s books (including young adult). It looks at the state of the industry from several angles including who’s buying, what they’re buying, where they’re buying and in what formats. In 2012, sales of children’s books rose 9 percent to $3.3 billion. The Association of American Publishers’ monthly StatShot program collects sales from 23 children’s publishers and found that children’s sales were down by 9.7 percent in the first 10 months of 2013. Blockbusters have a huge influence on annual sales. The massive popularity of “The Hunger Games” trilogy by Suzanne Collins boosted sales in 2012. Last year, the “Divergent” trilogy by Veronica Roth will help to boost the sales volume.

What about all of the hype surrounding the popularity of ebooks? In 2011 ebooks accounted for 7 percent of children’s sales compared to 16 percent in 2012. In 2013, ebooks accounted for 15 percent of all sales. Nielsen research shows that teens who prefer to read ebooks rose to 21 percent in 2013 compared to 19 percent in 2012. More teens prefer reading print, but 40 percent of teens plan to buy a tablet or already have one, so children’s ebook sales may continue to rise.
