COOPERSTOWN — People are more aware of the importance of nutrition than they were 10 years ago, but more pressure needs to be put on supermarkets, growers and Congress to ensure food safety, according to consumer activist Ralph Nader.

“I have a real dilemma when I’m on a plane during breakfast and I see a kid who gets eggs and sausage dripping in grease,” Nader told the state Natural Food Associates convention Saturday night in Cooperstown.

But he said children are learning more about nutrition and some day will be pounding a knife and fork on the dinner table crying, “We want broccoli. We want broccoli.”

Consumption of fresh fruit and vegetables has gone up 26 pounds per person per year over the past decade, Nader said, adding that New York and the Northeast are more informed about nutrition than the rest of the United States.

The three-day natural foods convention included commercial exhibits and a series of lectures on topics such as preventative medicine. Events were held at the Otesaga Hotel.

According to an employee at the hotel, dinner for the natural food enthusiasts Saturday night consisted of garden salad with romaine and leaf lettuce, whole wheat rolls, turkey and au jus gravy, swiss chard, broccoli, herb tea and milk. She said there were dishes of wheat germ on tables.
