LAURENS — Members of the Laurens Jaguar Drill Colorguard prayed to win the Mid-York Circuit class AA Championship, and their prayers were answered Saturday.

The perennial contenders took first place at the contest in Auburn by a mere four-tenths of a point, said Angela Deleski, captain.

“We finally did it,” she said. “A lot of people told us we won after we performed, but we were so nervous.”

To prepare for the performance, team members screamed and shouted to relieve tension and calm each other down, Deleski said. The screaming worked, as Laurens took first place in the AA class, the second highest of four categories.

As the competition neared, the 23 members of the colorguard, working with banners, weapons and other equipment, had practiced five days a week, two hours a day.

STAMFORD — Joint sponsorship of an essay contest open to Stamford and North Harpersfield area youth has been announced by the Colonel Harper Grange of Harpersfield and Utsayantha Grange of Stamford.

The title of the essay is “Clear Water through Conservation” and shall be from 750 to 1,000 words in length.

With the maintenance of ample supplies of good water becoming increasingly important in our growing population and expanding economy it is felt that this subject should be of universal interest. It is hoped that the youth groups such as boy and girl scouts, FFA, 4-H, etc., as well as the local schools, will help stimulate interest in the contest, perhaps by giving credit in some way to those who enter.

First prize in the local contest is $5 with $3 for second and $2 for third. Essays will be submitted in May at a date to be announced later.
