Farmers' Museum to host summer story time

A weekly family story hour for children in preschool through first grade will be at The Farmers’ Museum in Cooperstown starting at the end of June. 

Story Time will take place at 10:30 a.m. Tuesdays, June 25-Aug. 27. Children, accompanied by a grown-up, will hear a story read aloud in the historic Filer’s Corners School. They will also play a game, sing a song, or make a craft in one of the museum’s historic buildings. Each week features a new story and activities related to the story. The schedule is as follows:


June 25: “Ox Cart Man” by Donald Hall, illustrated by Barbara Cooney (1979), see a carved broom at the Westcott Broom Shop and Go to Todd’s General Store and trade potatoes, yarn, and candles for peppermint sticks.

July 2: “Peter Rabbit” by Beatrix Potter (1902), learn about the plants in Mr. MacGregor’s garden and press flowers in waxed paper.

July 9: “Little Blue Truck” by Alice Schertle and Jill McElmurry, bring animal puppets to life by making the sounds of the animals and Visit the Children’s Barnyard.

July 16: “The Chicken Problem: by Jennifer Oxley and Billy Aronson, gather eggs in the Lippitt Barnyard hen house. Collect toy chicks and singing the song from the book.

July 23: “Warm as Wool: by Scott Russell Sanders (2007), card some wool and see it spun on the wheel, watch the weaver working the loom, hand-spin wool and make bracelets.

July 30: “A Carousel Tale” by Elissa Klevin (2009), visit the Empire State Carousel, make a magic bird.

Aug. 6: “The Quilt Story” by Tony Johnston (1996), see the sleeping chambers and different beds at Bump Tavern, have a tea party on the porch.

Aug. 13: “Farmer Boy” by Laura Ingalls Wilder (1933), visit the print shop and meet the interpreter, help the children print something on the Liberty Press, have a math lesson with slates and dominoes.
