UNADILLA — Voters in school districts 1 and 2 of Otego and Unadilla Tuesday gave a 53 percent majority to a proposition clearing the way for a consolidation of the districts.

The vote was 766 in favor, 670 against, four void and one blank ballot.

The consolidation will create a district in the middle of which will be built a proposed high school at an estimated cost of $1,750,000. Under this system, the present schools at Otego and Unadilla will be used as schools for lower levels of education, while high school pupils will be transported to the new school.

In a joint statement following the announcement of the results, the Citizens Committee and Boards of Education of Otsego and Unadilla, stated:

“We the Citizens Committee and Boards of Education of Otego and Unadilla, express our appreciation of the representative vote on school consolidation. The whole matter has been discussed and considered in both communities with calm deliberation and thoughtful interest in the welfare of better educational advantages for our children.”

Tuesday’s vote was the culmination of petitions which were circulated among voters starting April 23.

Percy Tompkins of Otego and Walter L. Hunt of Unadilla were chairmen of the Citizens Committees in their communities.
