LOUDONVILLE — Steve Downey always stood head and shoulders above his teammates, coaches and opponents when he played basketball at Oneonta High School.

Three years ago, as a 6-foot 8-inch sophomore on the junior varsity, Downey was awesome in the middle of the OHS zone defense, especially for opposing junior varsity guards who tried to drive the lane against him.

Now, just a quarter-inch shy of seven feet, Downey is a freshman on the varsity at Siena College and still the center of attention. His coach, Mike Deane, calls Downey “Siena’s finest prospect ever” and has said he believes Downey can be a star in the ECAC North Atlantic Conference.

The games are the easy part for Downey, who says without hesitation that his “main weakness is strength.”

He is working to be more than just another tall, skinny guy in Division I, the top level of college basketball.

The real work comes in the Siena weight room. Twice a week, the day after a game, Downey pumps iron for 45 minutes.

“In high school, sometimes I’d skip breakfast or lunch,” said Downey. “My mom was always trying to force me to eat.”

Deane makes sure Downey gets what he needs.

Some friendly cafeteria workers also make sure Downey gets his fill.

“The ladies in the cafeteria know we’re on the basketball team, so they give us doubles of everything,” he said. “Sometimes for supper, I’ll have six hamburgers.”
