WALTON — Conditions were fantastic last weekend for snowmobile races at the Walton Fairgrounds, said those who turned out for the event.

Over 1,100 spectators turned out Saturday and Sunday for Walton’s sixth annual Winter Weekend to cheer on about 120 snowmobile entrants. The event is sponsored by the Fancher Hook and Ladder Company 3 of the Walton Fire Departments.

The racers traveled from across the northeast to win a piece of the prizes, totaling $8,000.

“We couldn’t ask for any better weather (Sunday),” said organizer Pat Covell. He said the speeds were down a bit because of the warmth, but it was a welcome change from last year’s freezing temperatures.

The weather was warm enough for the watchers, yet cold enough to prevent slush on the track.

Snowmobilers were running five to 10 mph faster on Sunday, reaching speeds of 80 to 82 mph, said Jack Finkle. He announces at races on a circuit run by the Eastern Snowmobile Racing Association.

There were seven entrants in Saturday’s big event, the Delaware County Cup Race. For the second year in a row, Mike Clapperton of Unadilla took first and $200 with a trophy.

Sunday’s big race was the 10-lap Northeastern United States Super Mod II Championship, won by Clay Rapperty from the Adirondack area.
