Starting off strong at Huntington

The Daily Star

---- — It’s been a good first week at the Huntington Memorial Library. All of the staff here are knowledgeable and helpful both to our patrons and to the new director!

This is a busy library and I’m learning more every day about the quality services we offer.

I’d like to meet you or your community group this month so I’ll host a meet and greet at the library from 4 to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

I look forward to learning how the library can continue to meet the community’s needs.

What was your favorite summertime read? I polled the library staff and have an interesting list of our favorites:

“Where’d you go Bernadette?” by Maria Semple; All three of the “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” series by Stieg Larsson; “Stargirl” by Jerry Spinelli; “The Particular Sadness of Lemon Cake” by Aimee Bender; “The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight” by Jennifer E. Smith; “Detroit. An American Autopsy” by Charlie LeDuff; “Stormdancer” by Jay Kristoff; “How to Eat Fried Worms” by Thomas Rockwell.

“A History of Horology” will be offered at 6:45 p.m. Monday. Walter Nagel,a retired educator, started collecting clocks in 1993 as an outgrowth of his interest in antiques and his fascination with measuring devices as a scientist. Nagel’s program will focus on the development of the clock as early time measuring devices with an emphasis on American clocks. Clock complexity and beauty will be evident from the examples shown. Plan on experiencing an informative program on a fascinating topic hosted by the Friends of the Library.

This fall our New York State Room librarian Sarah Livingston will lead a series of classes on several genealogy databases starting next week. They are computer-based classes, and the library will provide laptops for your use. Classes to be offered are “Family Search,” “ Library Edition,” and “” Registration is required, so please call 432-1980 or stop by the library to sign up.

Library Hours: 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday; 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday; closed Sunday.
