MORRIS — On rainy days or gloomy days, two elderly Morris gentleladies walk around the town for exercise — and to pick up discarded bottles and cans.

They redeem the beverage containers for a nickel each. Thousands of returned bottles and cans have turned into hundreds of dollars. And the two women have given all of it back to the community.

“Oh, good gracious,” said Ruby Foote as she tried to think about how many bottles she’s collected over the years. “I haven’t any idea how much it is.”

She and Irene Crumb gave a chicken and dumplings dinner Friday at the American Legion Hall for about 40 residents who have contributed bottles for their collection. The women gave $50 to the Legion for the use of the hall and also paid “not very much” to feed their guests, Mrs. Foote said.

“I think it’s great,” said Robert Todd, village superintendent. Not only do their efforts raise money for the community, they save village workers from having to pick up the discarded containers, and set a good example for other residents to exercise, he said.

The two women have donated the money to the Reading is Fundamental program at Morris Central School, the fire department and its auxiliary, the American Legion and its auxiliary and the emergency squad. When some older Morris women were sick at Easter, they sent Easter lilies.

The women don’t keep any gas money for the trips they make to Oneonta to the redemption center at Great American, where they redeem the bottles and cans.
