MORRIS — A committee of the Otsego County Fair Association is raising money to restore three buildings, especially Floral Hall, which was built in the late 1800s.
Lee Waite, chairman of the committee, set a goal of $40,000 to $50,000, estimating it will cost about that for repairs. “I would be happy if we get near to that amount,” he said.
The oldest building at the fairgrounds is Floral Hall, located outside of the track near the midway. “I have a picture from the late 1800s and the hall is in it,” said Dale All, manager of the fair association.
Restoration of Floral Hall will include a new section of flooring, roof and wall repair, and strengthening of support beams. Roof repair is also slated for Gilbert Hall and Martin Hall.
The fund raising is emphasizing youth development in its restoration project. Gilbert and Martin halls are primarily used by youths for their exhibits, Waite said.
The association would like to ensure that county youth’s handmade projects have a place to be displayed at the fairgrounds, he said. “We’d like the fair to stay agricultural where the 4-H youths and others can participate. For that to happen, they need a building for exhibits.”
