An ice cream maker with a social conscience will be the commencement speaker at Hartwick College Sunday, May 22.

Ben Cohen, president of Ben and Jerry’s Homemade, Inc., will speak on “Corporate Consciousness” during the ceremony that begins at 11 a.m.

Cohen, cofounder of the company that makes one of the best known ice creams in the nation, Ben & Jerry’s All Natural Ice Cream, will also be awarded an honorary doctoral degree.

Cohen was born in Brooklyn and attended high school in Merrick, Long Island, where he met Jerry Greenfield, who became long-time friend and partner.

Cohen attended Colgate College and Skidmore College. He taught at the Highland Community School in the Adirondack Mountains for three years, where he first started experimenting with ice cream making with the students.

In 1977, Cohen left the school, and after a year of research, he opened a homemade ice cream parlor with Jerry.

Ben & Jerry’s has become known for its ice cream and socially responsible way its business is conducted — the practice of donating seven and a half percent of pre-tax profits to charity is the highest percentage given by a publicly held corporation in America.
