Quilt show to feature area women's work

“Draping the Pews,” a free, nonjuried quilt show, will be presented from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 15 at the Fly Creek United Methodist Church. Refreshments will be served.

According to a media release, the show represents the work of a group of area women who began quilting together more than 20 years ago. The group includes members of the church, as well as other area residents who enjoy quilting.

The group meets from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, May through October, and creates numerous quilts for local charities. “Binky” blankets and “Huggie Dolls” are given to Social Services; lap quilts are made for Otsego Manor and the Veterans’ Home at Oxford; heart pillows go to the Bassett Healthcare Heart Program. Most quilts are scrap quilts made from donated fabrics, yard sale buys and members’ fabric “stashes.”

This year’s show will include a “Grandmother’s Flower Garden” quilt started more than 30 years ago by group member Wilma Dodge. It was “resurrected” and completed this summer with help from the church quilters.

An antique basket quilt top, purchased by a church member, and given to the quilters to complete, will be on display. Two old quilt tops, found among fabric donations, have been completed and will be returned to the family after the show.

Donations for the Cooperstown Food Bank will be accepted. Those wishing to show quilts may contact Gail Olin at 435-2946 to arrange a time to drop them off for display or for more information.
