Snow may fall on Christmas, or it may not … that is the best forecast weather watchers can give at this point.

But even though the weather on Christmas Day may be dry, the possibility of more snow on Tuesday should leave the area with a white holiday.

It’s too far in advance to predict the weather on Christmas because weather systems are very unpredictable, especially in the winter, said David K. Mattice, National Weather Service Observer for Oneonta. He said long-range forecasting in the winter is about 55 percent correct.

Harold Hollis, weather observer in Cooperstown, said there is a 70 percent chance of snow on Christmas, based on historical averages. “We’ll have something between now and Christmas,” he said.

Weather forecasters had predicted precipitation on Sunday, which turned into rain. The high was 43 degrees and at 10 p.m. it was 40 degrees outside, Mattice said. “It’s been a warm month,” he said.
