ONEONTA — The Long Island school of which Carl Spinola is principal has been recognized for academic excellence.
Spinola is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Sebastian Spinola, 2 Reynolds Ave., and a graduate of St. Mary’s School, the Oneonta High School and SUNY at Oneonta.
Spinola, principal of Ogden Elementary School at North Woodmere, has been named one of 36 outstanding elementary schools in New York state. The school is now eligible for national recognition.
The honor came from the Elementary School Recognition Program, administered by the New York State Department of Education.
“It is one thing to believe you are doing a good job, but another to be recognized by outsiders,” Spinola said. “When you are so close to something, it is difficult to be objective. I am proud of everyone at Ogden and this confirms my belief that Ogden provides our youngsters a solid educational program.”
Spinola has been with the Hewlett-Woodmere school system 10 years.

STAMFORD — A key meeting for the new Delaware County Chamber of Commerce is set for tonight at 7 at Kass’s Inn, Margaretville.
Men from the New York State Chamber and the Department of Commerce will be on hand to meet with county chamber officials at the session which should formally organize the new body.
Led by Douglas MacKenzie of Stamford, the new organization has been in the process of organization for more than a year. Target date now for the beginning of the operation is April 6.
Officers are to be elected, a budget adopted, a dues table established and a full-time director hired. There are several applicants for the post of director.
The new chamber will be dedicated to (1) the development of the county as a year-round recreation area and (2) the enticement of industry into Delaware County.
The budget, under the preparation of Bill Davis, past president of the Sidney Chamber of Commerce, has been a tough problem, as has been the matter of assessment to each individual chamber within the master unit.
