WALTON — Delaware County Extension Service members, former associates and many other friends throughout Delaware County honored Clarence Denton and family at a retirement dinner in Walton.

In addition, county agricultural agents from other counties, members of the Extension Staff at Cornell University and longtime friends from other counties also attended.

Ralph Higley served as master of ceremonies, introducing guests at the head table and the speaker of the evening, Prof. Ray Albrectsen, Animal Husbandry Department, Cornell University.

Prof. Albrectsen has worked closely with County Agent Denton and Delaware County dairymen through the years in helping to plan and conduct the dairy programs presented to dairymen throughout the past years.

In reminiscing on the topic, “32 Years of Extension Work,” Prof. Albrectsen briefly recounted the changes that have taken place in agriculture during Mr. Denton’s time as county agricultural agent.

He commented briefly on such programs as establishing bull associations, forerunner of A.I. associations, organizing the Delaware County DHIC, dairy herd management, TB and Bangs Disease control, improved forage practices and land uses, just to mention a few such programs.

“Soil testing in the earlier days involved some risk,” recounted Mr. Denton, “because the herd sires often were turned in with the cows on pasture. A couple of occasions, I can remember reaching the fence just a step or two in front of the bull, which didn’t appreciate the value of soil testing.”
