FLY CREEK — Town fathers in Otsego can quit fretting over spending public funds on a town bicentennial this month. The event is still three years off.

There’s a bicentennial of sorts on March 7 all right. But that one is for an extinct town of Otsego that was once located in Montgomery County and lasted only three years.

When the town of Otsego, the town of Cherry Valley and the county of Otsego were all formed on Feb. 16, 1791, Montgomery’s once-was town of Otsego ceased to exist, said George Tillapaugh, a historical buff from Cooperstown who researched the topic and the official records.

“A lot of people asked, ‘What are you going to do about the bicentennial?’” said Robert Murdock of Fly Creek, Otsego town supervisor.

He said the town researched for the correct date, with the help of the state Historical Association, and came away with the 1788 founding.

Tillapaugh said if the research for the founding date of Otsego was gleaned from an 1878 Otsego County history, that source gave the wrong impression — and the wrong town.

Officials at the Historical Association, which is also located in the town, said the old histories have frequently proven to be inaccurate.

At least with a new town of Otsego founding date to focus upon three years hence, some real plans for a proper celebration can be made.

MILFORD — The Village of Milford may have its first woman mayor as a result of the Union Caucus Thursday when a legal secretary defeated two other candidates for the nomination.

Mrs. Henry L. (June) Hotaling, a resident of Milford for nearly 10 years, defeated Oneonta schoolteacher Stanley Church and village businessman Dean Winsor to win the nomination in the Village Fire Hall.
