DELHI — A former restaurant building on Delhi’s Main Street will be transformed into a cluster of retail shops and business offices this spring.

Developer Scott Clark of Burton F. Clark Inc. is partners with Dan Tait Inc. in plans to renovate The Gathering restaurant into 12 shops and offices.

“I want to promote the downtown by attracting as much retail as possible, but this is also the county seat and office space is in short supply,” said Clark. “If we could fill the whole building with retail, we would.”

Office space became all the more scarce in Delhi with the January fire that destroyed 41-43 Main, where four business offices were located.

The building, originally built as a garage, before being changed into a restaurant, encompasses 12,000 square feet.

Clark and Tait bought the building at a foreclosure sale, shortly after The Gathering went out of business at the end of 1986.

Clark said attracting offices to occupy the second floor will be done through showing off a cathedral ceiling and installing a lot of glass.

The current building will be completely gutted and “brand new everything” will be built in to make the structure a top-notch commercial building, he said.

“What Oneonta Parks need is a little more ZEST!” said Parks Commissioner Sherman L. Decker, Monday night at the meeting of the Parks Board.

“Why don’t we paint the park benches different colors?” he suggested.

“That’s a fine idea,” chimed Commissioner W. Edwin Long. “Why haven’t we done it before?”

“We did once,” said Parks Foreman John M. House. “We had the job all done and the benches were set up. Then the Parks Board chairman at that time saw them. We had to repaint all the benches green again.”
