NORWICH — More people are moving to Chenango County than to either Otsego or Delaware counties, and it may be because of a unique combination of industry, lower land prices and Chenango’s rural setting.

Otsego and Delaware have the rural quality but not the jobs, and in some areas not the prices that Chenango can offer.

The Census Bureau estimates that Chenango County grew 2.5 percent from 1980 to 1987 to all all-time high of 50,600 people. Otsego grew only .6 percent and Delaware just .4 percent.

The growth is a good thing, said James W. Hanson, Chenango County planning director.

“It shows prosperity. It shows jobs added,” he said.

But the increase is moderate enough for the county to absorb it. If there were a population explosion, the county would have trouble with housing and services, he said.

Most of Chenango County’s influx is coming from downstaters looking for permanent rural homes within a reasonable distance of their friends and relatives in New York City, said Teal Gaylord, owner of Century 21 real estate in Norwich. They are moving mostly to the county’s southern towns of Greene, Smithville and McDonough, which are closer to the larger city comforts of Binghamton, she said.

RICHFIELD SPRINGS — Learning, work and fun were combined in a unique project this past summer in Iran, by U.S. Peace Corps volunteer Jack Huxtable, of Richfield Springs, RD, which invoked praise from the Governor-General of Otsan, the Sharastan Chief and the Otsan Director of Education.

Huxtable and his students designed and in six weeks built, with the advice and help of Engineer Tamjidzadeh, the school principal, what has been termed the first “sanitary-type swimming pool” ever built in western Azerbaijan.
