An Oneonta woman worked behind the scenes four months to bring New York voters two televised debates, one of which will air tonight.

Incumbent Sen. Daniel P. Moynihan, D-Pindars Corners, will face challenger Robert R. McMillan, R-Long Island, in Syracuse, in a debate to be aired Saturday over 10 Public Broadcasting Stations in New York from 8 to 9 p.m.

Susan R. Hughson of 11 Ravine Park North arranged the meeting. The job was an unexpected one that came as part of her position on the state Board of Directors of the League of Women Voters.

The goal of the non-partisan league’s sponsorship is to give voters a chance to see and hear the candidates speak on issues facing the nation so that they can make an informed choice on Election Day, Tuesday, Nov. 8, she said.

Hughson said she wasn’t worried about tonight’s meeting turning from an issues debate into a mudslinging contest, a criticism of the presidential race. She said she is confident that the three panelists the league chose to ask questions will keep the candidates issues-oriented.

HARTWICK — The maintenance and improvement of the Kinney Memorial Library Building recently was assured when a gift of $2,000 in negotiable securities was presented by Arthur R. Kinney of Hartwick to the Township of Hartwick.

Mr. Kinney officially offered the gift to the Library on Aug. 23 this year, but he died a month later, Sept. 24, at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

The Kinney Memorial Library is a gift to the Town of Hartwick to be maintained as a public library for the Village of Hartwick and the surrounding area.
