St. Mary’s School children are making great use of their school’s library — the first one that St. Mary’s has ever had.

The library came into being Monday after an estimated 400 books were collected from each classroom and arranged in the old health office adjacent to the gym, Sister Mary Rosarri reported.

But there is no official librarian.

Sister Mary Leo, first grade teacher, explained how the new library works.

Each grade has a designated afternoon “library period” in the week-long schedule. At these times, the youngsters troop to the small library under the watchful eyes of their teachers.

Keeping track of the books and signing them out to the youngsters is handled by “two or three parents who volunteer an afternoon a week.”

Sister Leo explained that before the library was created, children could only read books written for their own grade levels. These were kept in the classrooms.

The sister also invited contributions to the new library. There are 265 pupils in St. Mary’s, making an average of one and a half books per pupil.
