Area veterans are making plans for a memorial to honor Otsego County veterans of the Korean War and a ceremony to dedicate the monument on Memorial Day.
“It’s long past due,” said Frank Patten, a veteran who is working on public relations for the project. He was wounded twice as a corporal in the Marine Corps who served in Korea from 1950-52.
The Korean veterans have sent out letters to county businesses to raise funds. The group has about $600, said Patten, and in another week estimates on the cost of the memorial will be available.
The Otsego County monument will have the names of about 14 men from the county who died in Korea, Patten said. But it will also honor women as well as men who served in that conflict, he said.
Patten said the Korean memorial will be made by Cherry Valley Monument. He declined to comment on specific plans for the monument but said it will fit in with the Vietnam and Beirut memorials that were dedicated in Neahwa Park on Memorial Day 1987.

Spring is for kids and they know how to enjoy every minute of it. Their idea of fun hasn’t changed much since most present-day adults were kids. One formula is to get some good pals and some fishing equipment. That’s what Jeffrey Edson, Claude Joslin, Clark Howey and Mary Ann Balnis did yesterday at Portlandville. Another good idea is to take an old metal can, some old wheels and some friendly muscle and build a car. That’s what driver Mike Hammond did. Supplying the muscle in this case were Fred Powell and George Sanly.
