EAST MEREDITH — From the rhythm of African dance beats to the lilt of poetry and the resonance of a grand piano, the West Kortright Centre, in the hills of East Meredith, will start ringing in mid-June.

And with the installation of a heating system, activities are planned beyond the warm summer months, through the chillier spell of fall and ending with a concert in December.

The Centre’s philosophy is to sponsor a variety of programs to meet audiences’ range of cultural and demographic backgrounds, said Martha Van Burek, executive director.

The biggest event of the year comes early with the appearance of the Bhundu Boys of Zimbabwe at 9 p.m. June 24. The musicians are young perpetuators of their country’s traditions. Their music, a blend of traditional and contemporary African rhythms and melodies, is referred to as “Jit.”

Other events this in year’s line-up includes five theater performances, eight musical presentations, the debut of a new chamber music group, a literary event and a showcase of young area musicians.

Oneonta’s school district administrators announced Monday that an Oneonta native and Oneonta High School graduate, William R. Pirone, 25, of 410 Main Street, has been named to a three year probationary appointment as varsity tennis Coach and World History teacher at OHS to succeed George Waddington.

Mr. Waddington resigned from the OHS faculty to accept a post at Bugbee School.

Dr. Harold V. Hager said Monday that Mr. Pirone will take over the coaching of the varsity tennis squad and the teaching post in September. However, he said, no replacement has been named to date to succeed Mr. Waddington as director of the Oneonta Adult Education program.

Graduated from Oneonta High School in 1956, Mr. Pirone was accorded a Bachelor of Arts degree in Social Studies at Syracuse University in 1960.

He taught at Oxford Academy from 1960 to 1961, accepting a teaching post at Sidney Central School in 1961.
