Keep kids reading this summer with ebooks

PopUp Library is a great way to introduce kids to ebooks and keep them reading all summer long.

StarWalk Kids Media is a digital library with hundreds of children’s books. During July, StarWalk has generously opened its website to our library patrons to use under the title of PopUp Library. It’s a great opportunity to play with digital media while the kids are on summer vacation.

You can read these ebooks on any device with Internet access by going to starwalkkids.com/popup. You will have access free of charge for the entire month. This collection was developed by popular children’s author Seymour Simon and Liz Nealon. They were looking for the best platform to use for converting their print books into ebooks when they decided to build their own digital library. According to School Library Journal, “the collection is gorgeously designed and tightly curated for exceptional quality. It contains about 60% highly illustrated nonfiction and the titles are licensed for simultaneous use by multiple readers. A subscription to StarWalk Kids is a solid way to support the Common Core State Standards for reading and writing.”

During July, searches on the website are geared to allow a child to quickly and easily search for an ebook by title, author, keyword, grade or Lexile score. With the paid subscription, the search is more robust and includes age, genre, subject, guided reading level and teaching links. It also allows you to search by Common Core State Standard.

Navigating through the website is fairly intuitive too. Of course, each device will function differently, but there are options to look at each page at the bottom of the screen or to highlight and add notes to the book. Some books have a read-to-me function that allows a child to open an audio component to the book.
