Despite a somewhat sluggish start amid rainy weather, state and local tourism officials are predicting that the rest of the summer season will progress at anything but a snail’s pace.

A report recently released by the state Department of Economic Development indicates that advance bookings for vacation spots throughout the state have been strong, particularly for the Memorial Day and Fourth of July weekends.

But hotels, motels and restaurants aren’t the only spots that have seen an upswing in attendance. “The busy pace set by the record-breaking Memorial Day weekend has continued at state park facilities where we can look forward to one of our best summers ever,” said State Parks Commissioner Orin Lehman.

This year’s I LOVE NEW YORK Summer Festival is expected to draw even more people than usual to the Central-Leatherstocking region.

Highlights of the festival — which will be based in Cooperstown — include the Baseball Hall of Fame weekend July 23-24, and the James Fenimore Cooper Bicentennial Commemorative Weekend, Sept. 15-17.

The City of Oneonta has committed itself to bear 50 percent of the cost of construction for a new airport if and when the project is approved by the Federal Aeronautics Administration.

The Common Council Tuesday night passed a resolution declaring the city’s desire to participate in such a construction program and to supply half of the necessary funds.

The resolution is a follow up to the city’s application to the FAA for funds to construct a new airport on Dutch Hill, northeast of the city.

The Council last week authorized Mayor Albert S. Nader to submit the city’s application for funds before the July 3 deadline for such applications. Mr. Nader said the application had been submitted July 2.

He explained that the resolution is more or less a prerequisite for FAA consideration of the city’s application.
